Noctura Interview
Performed via Skype in July 2011

Hailing from Indianapolis (USA), the rock band Noctura spent the first few years of its existence as a two-person studio project comprised of Mandy Suiter and Jeremy Roche. On the strength of a handful of demos alone, the band quickly garnered a devoted following around the world. And yes, their music is THAT good ... one could be forgiven for mistaking their early songs for lost tracks from Evanescence’s Fallen album.

Noctura

Noctura has recently released their full-length CD, Surrender the Sun, mixed by none other than Dan Certa (Seether, We Are The Fallen, The Fray). Sonic Cathedral caught up with Mandy and Jeremy on the heels of their CD release concert. Dive in for a behind-the-scenes look at the making of Surrender the Sun and Noctura’s first live performance!

One Without

Most bands want to have as much control over their destinies as they possible can. Usually that doesn’t happen – but in the case of the Swedish band One Without, they truly have taken charge of their sound and their future. Their second album, Sweet Relief, takes the brooding, death-metal-tinged alternative sound of One Without’s debut, Thoughts of a Secluded Mind, and makes it louder and more dynamic and furious. One Without also chose to release Sweet Relief independently and for free. It was a risky choice, given the current state of the metal music industry. Yet, by deciding to leave their former label and go out on their own, One Without has managed to achieve considerable success.

Recently, Sonic Cathedral staff writer Sara Letourneau talked with two members of One Without: singer Catrin Feymark, and grunter/guitarist Kenny Boufadene. They talked about Sweet Relief, the band’s musical evolution, the famous Gothenburg metal scene, and – as Kenny hints later on – how One Without is reaping the rewards of their gamble for independence. Read on to learn more!

Shield of Wings Interview
Performed in June 2011

I’m not sure whether it is more unusual to have a blizzard in Atlanta or to stumble upon an honest-to-goodness American symphonic metal band. But if blizzards lead to discovering a new favorite like Chicago-area metallers Shield of Wings, then a week of snow-bound madness is well worth it. Six months later, and the band’s debut EP Solarium is still in heavy rotation.

Shield of Wings

Sonic Cathedral’s Robin Stryker caught up with Grace Méridan (lead vocals) and James Gregor (guitars/vocals) to chat about music, weaponry, epic burgers and much more. Dive in to learn more about this up-and-coming band!

Stream of Passion

Romantic, dynamic, entrancing, sensual… These are just some of the words that describe the music of Stream of Passion. The Dutch sextet’s brand of symphonic metal with progressive twists, lush atmospheres, and the mesmerizing voice of Mexican-born singer Marcela Bovio makes one of the most unique and enjoyable bands of its kind. Now they look to solidify their position as one of the genre’s pioneers with their latest album, Darker Days.

Marcela was gracious enough to chat with Sonic Cathedral staff writer Sara Letourneau the week before the European release of Darker Days. The two ladies had much to discuss: Latin music, languages, Vincent Van Gogh, winters in the Netherlands, long bus rides in Canada, and the list goes on. How does all this tie in with the new album? Keep reading to find out!
