Hydria Interview
Sara Letourneau talks with singer Raquel Schüler and guitarist Marcelo Oliveira

Hydria

Bands from South America are often overshadowed by their North American and European counterparts. That’s not entirely true for Hydria. This Brazilian symphonic metal band caught their country’s attention in 2008 after two opportunities of a lifetime: opening shows for their idols, Tarja Turunen and Within Temptation. This led to increased demand of Hydria’s debut album, Mirror of Tears. Fast-forward to early 2011, and Hydria is now celebrating the release of their second album, Poison Paradise. This album shows the band’s maturation in every aspect of their music, from simplified compositions and rich orchestrations to singer Raquel Schüler’s heartfelt lyrics.

Most bands seemingly trudge along in obscurity for years before eventually coming to the attention of music fans. But a slow plod was not for Lovelorn, the new Belgian band formed by Ladyhell (ex-Skeptical Minds, Valkyre) and Corpus Christi (ex-Free Launch) in late 2010. After hitting it off while collaborating on the Road to Consciousness rock-metal opera project, Ladyhell and Corpus Christi moved at warp speed. Fast forward a few months to February 2011, and violà! Lovelorn launched An Intense Feeling of Affection, the band’s five-song debut EP that combines alternative, rock, metal, electro and ambient elements.

Seven Kingdoms Interview
Sara Letourneau chats with lead guitarist Camden Cruz and singer Sabrina Valentine

 Seven Kingdoms

Sometimes it’s beneficial to put a new twist on a popular style of music. In Seven Kingdoms’ case, that twist is creating a ripple effect through the metal world. Critics have raved about the Florida quintet’s 2010 self-titled second album (read our review here), which shows off Seven Kingdoms’ explosive brand of power metal with strokes of death, thrash, and progressive metal instead of the usual symphonic trends. Other people dig it, too – and not just the fans. Just two months after releasing Seven Kingdoms, the band was invited to kick off ProgPower USA’s Midweek Mayhem festivities. Then in November and December came the true highlight: An opening slot for the North American tour of Blind Guardian, one of Seven Kingdoms’ biggest influences. You know an up-and-coming band is on to something good when big-name bands and metal moguls pay this kind of attention to them.

Kerstin Bischof, Lisa Middelhauve and Guido Wehmeyer interview

I could spend paragraphs writing a mini-biography of Kerstin Bischof and Lisa Middelhauve, the former frontwomen of Xandria, and their guitar-wielding comrade-in-arms, Guido Wehmeyer (ex-Axxis). But who am I kidding? You all want to know what their big secret is, and plan to skip past the introduction. Isn’t that right?
