When I was informed that Kristell Lowagie was planning to form a new band, I was curious. I knew Kristell from her older band, Skeptical Minds, and I wanted to see if she will try something new and make the difference. Also, the fact that Gogo Melone (Luna Obscura) would create Lovelorn’s artwork make me unable to wait. Gogo is one of the best, in my opinion; I love her paintings. And here it was, the album finally in my hands.

So here is a small bio of the band: Lovelorn formed after Ladyhell (Kristell Lowagie) and Corpus Christi (B. Daubresse) met for the Road To Consciousness project in 2009 (a metal/rock opera which will be out in February 2011). Their love and passion for nice melodies brought them to work together on a common project. Lovelorn tells stories about all forms of love: passion, destruction, hate, motherhood, and love of nature, just to name a few.

The title of the ΕP is An Intense Feeling of Affection. Seriously, the artwork of the promo “affected” me in some way. The front cover of the album shows a girl with a sad expression on her face. Also, the colours which were used for the artwork were the dark ones. Generally, by looking the cover of this five-track EP, you get into the “gothic” mood. The logo of the band looks like perfect to me, too. As well, I noticed that in the title of the album were two different types of letters. Doubtless, the front cover is a piece of supreme art. (Well done, Gogo!)

Obviously, Kristell wrote more personal lyrics this time. To tell the truth, I didn’t really find very exceptional the lyrics she wrote for the old Skeptical Minds songs. In Lovelorn, her songwriting changed. In my opinion, Lovelorn’s songs are more mature lyrically.

The first track is titled “Save Me.” It is a typical rock song up to the days. Actually, that track brings to my mind bands like Paramore. The drums sound solid, the guitar is as “hard” as it should be, and the backing vocals are worked very carefully. A very modern rock song; and in my opinion, it was a right choice to put it as an opening track.

The second song is named “Sagarmatha”. That song has amazing, from-the-heart lyrics. The music reminds the old Skeptical Minds era (the synth melody, mainly). And how could it not be like that? Kristell was one of the composers in her old band. I think that kind of melody (the dark synth/pop/electro sound) is Kristell’s musical identity. I really like Kristell’s voice while she is singing these lyrics: “No time for me to have a dream / I cry for our mistakes.” She brings so much emotion in that part of the song. Although I have to admit, “Sagarmatha” is my less favourite track of the album.

The third song is titled “Cold.” That song is about the frozen feelings we all receive when we get heartbroken. It is about the coldness of someone’s soul, generally. Again, Gabriel Arkangel (the drummer of the band) did a quite good work here. Pure blast beats, and the guitar sounds heavier than before.

The fourth song is the most aggressive of all. It is named “Something Wrong,” and it is full of anger and hate. It starts with these lyrics: “Hey, you / Why did you believe you could steal my man / You could steal my friends / What is wrong with you?” I think that Lovelorn could make a video clip for that song. It is a very theatrical song.

The fifth and the last song of Lovelorn’s EP is called “Little Princess Euphoria,” and it is dedicated to Kristell’s young daughter. “I’ll never let you down / Always stand by your side / My life without you has no taste.” Those lyrics told us everything about Kristell’s feelings for her child. I think that one is the most personal song of the EP.

To sum up, Kristell’s new project is something fresh. Lovelorn is not a typical female-fronted band. Also, it should be known that the four current members of the band have nicknames (for instance, Kristell is named Ladyhell on the album’s back cover). I think that Lovelorn is trying to re-create and re-define themselves through their music. I am really happy to see that Kristell changed direction, became more mature, and started writing about human feelings and difficult things and situations in life. If you like pop/rock with electro elements, then you have to check out Lovelorn. The future is before them. Thumbs up to Kristell.
