Dawn of Destiny is a lightly symphonic power metal band from Germany and this is their second studio disc. Rebellion in Heaven continues their basic approach from their first studio disc …Begins, but they have by no means repeated themselves. Still intact is fast, dense, crunchy, guitar-driven upbeat power metal with extremely catchy and memorable choruses, but there is a noticeable maturity and diversity in their songwriting. The songs are more polished and even more immediately accessible and hooky than the ones on …Begins, which is saying a lot. They have toned down the thrashy aggression and warmed up their songs with a more frequent use of acoustic or symphonic keys; the keys are still relatively sparse but exceedingly well-placed, usually serving as song introductions or poignant interludes. Though still predominantly upbeat and enthusiastic like …Begins, there is a broader range of emotions displayed – in particular, Rebellion in Heaven mixes in mid-paced, somewhat brooding passages and vocal lines, often well-reflecting the mood of the lyrics.

Their female vocalist, Tanja Maul, is rapidly becoming one of the most powerfully emotive singers in power metal today. Make no mistake – Dawn of Destiny is heavy and fairly busy power metal which could easily drown out a lesser talent, but Tanja has an incredibly passionate, soaring, penetrating delivery that actually threatens to overshadow the music rather than the other way around. There are very few vocalists that are so musical and expressive yet so powerful, and she sings with an enthusiasm and vigor that outshines her already stellar performance on …Begins – I’ve listened to Rebellion in Heaven many times and I still get chills in places hearing her sing. There are occasional death vocals as well scattered throughout the songs.

Dawn of Destiny is really on to something. They have chosen to work within a metal genre that is not well-known for innovation or variety, yet their songs have an incredible freshness and fervor. They continue to craft enthusiastic music with an extremely appealing mix of satisfying variety and complexity along with unbelievably hooky choruses – and did I mention they have one of the best female vocalists in metal today?
