In this day and age when there are a plethora of female fronted bands out there, it’s a rare occurrence when you find one that really makes an impression on you. Eilera is certainly one of those bands for me (though I suppose they’re actually a duo and not actually a band). They have a signature sound that I think is very important when starting out as a band. I first heard their song "Fusion" from their previous EP Precious Moments. I quite liked it, and was excited to hear their first full length album, Fusion, which was to come out a couple years later.

Before I get into the album though, I’ll try to describe the music. The music definitely would be metal, though I can’t think of a sub-genre of it that they really fit into. The vocals, which are performed by the singer named Eilera, are very good on this album. Her voice is very Bjork-esque to me, though it’s pitched higher. She does have a bit of a problem with diction some of the time, but it doesn’t really become bothersome. The other member which makes up this duo is the guitar player, named Loïc Tézénas. His performances on this album are really good I think; I particularly enjoy his acoustic playing. Session musicians play the rest of the instruments, and they all do a very good job—percussion and the violin playing are wonderful throughout the album.

Some of my favorite songs on this album include the rocking "Non Merci", the intense "Fusion", the varied "Addicted", and the catchy "Free…Are You?". However, things get a little silly and ridiculous in the song "Healing Process." I enjoy the sound of the song, but the lyrics…I can’t take them seriously. My only other complaint would be the song "The Angel You Love…The Angel You Hate." The vocals don’t mesh well with the instruments on this song at all. It’s actually kind of painful for me to listen to honestly.

Although there are a few moments that could have been improved some, most of the music on Fusion is very enjoyable. If you want to hear something fresh in the female fronted metal world, you should definitely check out Fusion.
