After hearing Animal Alpha’s 2005 album Pheromones, I was anxious to hear how their new album (with a ridiculously long title) You Pay For the Whole Seat But You’ll Only Need the Edge would sound. I did enjoy Pheromones quite a bit—it was a bit too quirky at times, but still had a certain charm about it which made it very enjoyable. So how does this album compare with Pheromones?

While Agnete was a wonderful vocalist on Pheromones, I feel like she has really lost some of her charm on this album. Her voice is much rougher when she is singing in her clean voice. I’m not quite sure if that is the effect she wanted to go for or if her voice has possibly been damaged from singing the way she does. Either way, both her clean singing and screaming are not as pleasing for me as it once was. The music is basically the same kind of thing that was on Pheromones—fast paced hard rock songs.

Unfortunately, I feel a lot of the compositions just are not as memorable or enjoyable as their past songs. However, there are some definite highlights. "Fire! Fire! Fire!" is a top notch Animal Alpha that has a similar effect on me as "Bundy" did on their past album. "Tricky Threesome" is also a very nice track that has some truly gorgeous parts—it is definitely one of their best compositions they’ve made. The rest of the tracks are typical Animal Alpha songs, though they are not very memorable. Also, it’s very unfortunate the album has so many average compositions as the album is under a half hour long—it seems like if a band is going to release such a short album that they would at least make sure all the compositions were quite memorable.

I can’t say I’m impressed with most of the tracks at all. While they are not terrible, Animal Alpha can definitely do better—as shown on Pheromones. If you enjoyed Pheromones I would check out this album for the tracks "Fire! Fire! Fire!" and "Tricky Threesome", which are possibly two of the best songs the band has come up with. However, if Pheromones was not your cup of tea, this album definitely won’t be either.
